Understanding WiFi

This article discusses WiFi, more commonly known as 802.11, or any of its variants.

WiFi is a wireless networking standard that uses 2.4 Ghz radio waves to send and receive netowrk data wirelessly. WiFi products and networks are most commonly used to interface computers with existing wired Ethernet networks.

Currently there are several speed-related WiFi standards such as 802.11b (11mbps), 802.11g (54mbps), and so on.

The official range of WiFi is 150 meters, although with a variety of special antennas and signal boosters, that range has been successfully extended up to many miles.

There are many community groups engaged in building and maintaining free long-distance WiFi networks, although these coverage areas are incomplete and subject to volunteer effort availability.

Many websites, such as Wifinder, list free WiFi "hotspots" - areas where people can gain free wireless connection access.
